What was your favorite book as a kid?
Mine might have been Animalia, by Graeme Base. It still might be one of my favorites. Each page is dedicated to a letter in the alphabet and illustrated just beautifully. On each page, it is filled with things the reader can look for, all starting with the same letter. I might not be doing the best job at explaining this right now... If I'm not, go to the public library and check it out. It's awesome.
With new technologies of iPad and Kindle... Do you think that books, like printed newspapers are a dying breed?
I like the iPad and Kindle for environmental reasons... Less books in print, less trees cut down. However, I love going to the library and actually holding a book. I like having the experience of turning the page, feeling the cover and even how it smelling it. Oh, the smell of library books!
If you think books and newspapers are things of the past like vinyls and cassettes, how do you think it will change childhood development? If I were a youngster again and The Runaway Bunny with my mom, I might not like it that much. I loved that book, too. But, I love it because it had a cardboard cover that I could put in my mouth and chew on after story time... Imagine if I did that to a Kindle? Goodness, I would not be on Santa's good list - how stressful!
How do you see technology changing literary world in the next decade?
The first thing that came to my mind was Amelia Bedilia. I don't know if I'm even spelling that right, but I always enjoyed those books because she was such a freakin goofball.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I hate reading anything on a screen. IT HURTS MY EYES.
JUST GIVE ME AN OLD BOOK OR A WARM NEWSPAPER, THEY SMELL SO MUCH BETTER :)
I agree, I have a hard time reading material on a screen. After a few hours my eyes get dried out and sore.
ReplyDeleteFor one of my classes, my Professor put all of our reading online. Some of them were over 20 pages long! I ended up spending a fortune in printing costs because I had to print off every single reading.
I would like to see recycled books instead of technology taking over. Maybe they could start up a plant where they take old books that maybe missing pages or are a bit worn out and recycle them to make new books! It would cut down on waste and we would cut down less trees.
Don't get me wrong, I love technology but not when I have to read from it.
My favorite children's book was "The Secret Garden," and my old copy is so worn it's falling apart. So, I've actually been toying with getting a Kindle version so I can read it in the future without having to endanger the book more.
ReplyDeleteI love books so much that I have books everywhere, and in every possible form. I have books on my Kindle app (iPod touch, not ideal because it's so small but very convenient), on the coffee table, by my bed and an audiobook in the car. I purchase books at the bookstore, on Amazon.com, get library books and buy recycled books at the library booksale.
After having read Kindle books for over a year now, one of my complaints is that if I really like a book, I can't lend it to anyone. So I will need to think about this more.
Technology will never replace ALL live arts, real books, etc... IMHO.
Ellen... I had to google what IMHO meant... You are with the times, missy!
